Queensland on high alert for bushfire season

Queensland is on high alert as it faces its third dangerous fire season in a row.

Queensland Fire and Rescue assistant commissioner Neil Gallant spoke to Green Cross Australia about how important it is for Queenslanders to prepare themselves for the bushfire.

"Residents really need to take responsibility for their own safety," assistant commissioner Gallant said.

"Whilst the 35,000 volunteer fire fighters across Queensland will certainly do their best to protect residents, it really is up to residents to make sure their properties are clear of vegetation around the properties, particularly to give the volunteers a chance to work from there and help protect their property," he said.

Experts are warning that  western Queensland is at particularly high risk.

"Most people who live in those areas or have grown up there know the risks and prepare. But people recently moved to those areas or travelling through those areas certainly need to be aware of the heightened fire danger and take precautions."
