Bushfire season around the corner
Hi supporter,
Have you noticed the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service has been busy undertaking hazard reduction burns? With a big wet season behind us and a dry winter to come, the message is loud and clear: Queenslanders need to get ready for a busy bushfire season.
This month, tick off an action in your Harden Up plans with a super easy preparedness task, find out how to contribute to our Harden Up weather events database, read a wonderful, heartwarming story of resilience and survival, and find out how to volunteer to help others in times of need.
Action idea: Listen to Queensland's Emergency Warning Signal
Access to information is everything in an emergency. When disasters happen, alerts and announcements will be preceded by a special sound. To stay informed, find your local ABC radio station and listen to Standard Emergency Warning Signal on Queensland's Get Ready website. Don't forget to log in to your Harden Up plan and tick off "Learn how to tune into warnings and alerts".
Tell us about bushfires in your area
Help us continue building our Harden Up weather events database! Recently, we heard from Leisa who told us about a 2009 bushfire in her local area. If you can find an event we've missed, please contact us. To review 150 years of local weather history, search for your suburb here. We'd love to hear from you!
Building back green in Chelmer
Suzanne and Peter Davies are busy rebuilding their beloved Chelmer home that was left devastated by flood in 2011. Thanks to partnerships catalysed by Green Cross Australia's Build it Back Green program, the Davies' home now boasts a range of resilient and sustainable features.
Become a volunteer
Wherever you live, a volunteering organisation needs your help. During times of crises, these organisations mobilise to help in all sorts of ways. Websites such as Emergency Volunteering play a vital role. Find out more about volunteering on our website.
