Build it Back Green: Victorian bushfire recovery

In the aftermath of tragic 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, Green Cross Australia worked with impacted communities in Flowerdale and Kinglake Ranges to support a sustainable bushfire recovery effort.

With support from the Victorian Government Sustainability Fund (through Sustainability Victoria) Green Cross and partners including Green Building Council of Australia and Alternative Technology Association developed and promoted an award-winning green rebuilding portal that is used by thousands of bushfire affected families who wish to rebuild to advanced sustainability and bushfire resilience levels.

www.builditbackgreen.org is a portal which empowers families rebuilding from and exposed to bushfires to use sustainable and resilient building materials, products, services and practices. The site includes stories of community resilience and offers tips that enable impacted communities to recovery with low energy, water and waste bills as well as reduced environmental impact.

This website won a prestigious global award for "Best in Class" environmental website in 2010 from the New York City based Interactive Media Council. If you are exposed to bushfire hazards, this site is for you.
