Adapting to Change

Adapting to Change
Most efforts to address climate change so far have been almost entirely focused on mitigation - taking action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to enhance the world's carbon 'sinks'. Because we can anticipate at least a 2 degree increase in temperature in future, we also must adapt to protect our communities, infrastructure and ecosystems.
Many of the decisions made every day by home-builders, town-planners, transport engineers, water managers and others will have consequences far into the future. By taking early adaptation actions, we can ensure that our decisions reduce, rather than compound, the social, economic and environmental impacts of climate change on the future generations.

Queensland is home to the CSIRO's Climate Change Adaptation Flagship and the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility. Climate adaptation is an important area of Queensland state and local government policy development, given our exposure to gradual and severe weather impacts.
