New-look Harden Up to meet today's challenges

As incredible images of the storm surge caused by Hurricane Sandy on the US east coast were beamed around the world this week, it is a timely reminder of the serious damage storm surges can cause to our coastal communities.

This Sunday, Green Cross Australia will present a stunning new video visualising the impact of a storm surge on Townsville caused by a hypothetical cyclone. We will be at Townville’s famous Cyclone Sunday event.

In other news, Harden Up - Protecting Queensland has undergone a facelift, with a new-look design that is more accessible than ever, including mobile device optimisation and brand new feature, Disaster Connect, to provide you with the best up-to-date information about severe weather and preparedness advice.

Green Cross Australia is also excited to announce that its award-winning project, Witness King Tides, which aims to raise awareness around sea level rise and storm surge risks, is going national.

What is a storm surge?

With Hurricane Sandy causing havoc in the US, everybody is talking about storm surges. A storm surge is a localised rise in sea level caused by a low pressure system such as a cyclone, hurricane or east coast low. Find out more about this phenomenon on Harden Up.

Virtual cyclones to hit Townsville

Watch this stunning visualisation of a storm surge impacting Townsville. Together with CSIRO, Green Cross Australia has created a short video to illustrate what could happen if a cyclone like Yasi combined with a high tide, creating a devastating storm surge.

Australia, witness king tides

Our Witness King Tides project is going national. Coastal communities across Australia can now get involved in a community photography project to raise awareness about sea level rise. This summer, we encourage everyone to capture the king tide and submit it to our mosaic of images.

Before the storm season, check your underground drainage is clear. Poke a hose down there and clear out obstructing gravel, leaves, and even tennis balls.
