Help your friends to get prepared

January was an extraordinary month!

Australia started 2013 with a record-breaking heat wave that lasted for more than two weeks across many parts of the country.

Then while Tasmania, Victoria, the ACT and NSW experienced bushfires, Queensland faced the prospects of floods just two years after the devastating floods of 2011.

This series of tragic events has seen the traffic to the Harden Up website soar. Thousands of Queenslanders know they need to be well informed and better prepared for weather events.

If you’ve already made your personal resilience plan then ensure you help your friends and neighbours get prepared too. Send them the link to the Harden Up website and encourage them to make a plan.

Keep up to date with the big wet

Use Brisbane City Council's crowdmap to get the latest road closures, flood areas and sandbag locations. You can also add your own info to help provide a better view of the overall issues throughout Brisbane.

From the big wet to the big clean up

As the clean up begins, it’s important to continue to stay safe and healthy. Queensland Health has a wealth of info, from things to consider when entering a damaged property through to ensuring your food is safe to eat.

How you can help

There are many ways you can help to get the community back on track: pledge to the Queensland Floods Appeal 2013, donate much-needed items via GIVIT, be an Emergency Volunteer or check through the list of animals lost and found in the floods.

The role of social media in an emergency

Last week a curated Twitter chat took place about the Australian bushfires and the corresponding social media response. Participants from all around the world joined the conversation and it was great to see that Aussies are developing some great initiatives in social media integration.
