Surat recorded two major flood peaks in January 2011 - a new record peak height of 12.75 metres (January 4) and 12.4 metres (January). Major flood level (9m) was exceeded from 23 December to 29 January.

Rainfall recorded in December 2010 and January 2011, which led to major flooding at Surat, was heaviest over the eastern half of the catchment. Between 300 to 600 mm of rainfall was recorded over the Condamine River catchment during December and January. Falls between 100 and 300 mm were recorded over the Balonne River catchment. The heaviest rainfall periods occurred from December 26 to 28, with falls between 100 and 200 mm, and from January 6 to 12, with falls between 200 and 400 mm.

River height records at Surat at its current site commenced in 1943. The January 4 peak of 12.75 metres is a new record. The January 18 peak of 12.4 metres on equals the height recorded in March 2010 and is the second highest on record.
