Bushfire Enoggera 2012-08-19

On Sunday 19 August, the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) began a controlled hazard reduction burn in bushland near Enoggera, a Brisbane suburb.

However, by midday, the fire had jumped containment lines and was threatening properties on the edge of the bushlands. The fire created a smoke haze affecting the suburbs of Michelton, The Gap, Keperra, Ashgrove and Enoggera, which was present for 24 hours after the fire was extinguished. A total area of 150 hectres of bushland was burned.

Up to 17 fire crews fought to control the bushfire, conducting property protection activities in nearby streets, including Ironbark Place, Kooya Road, Morningvale Close, Evergreen Street, Greenview Close and Nateres Close in Mitchelton and Yarrabee Road at The Gap.

QFRS issued advice to residents in properties on the border of the bushland, asking them to:Event -Story Image

• Put on protective clothing
• Drink lots of water
• Move car/s to a safe location
• Close windows and doors and shut blinds
• Bring pets inside and restrain them (leash, cage or secure room) and provide water
• Wet down fine fuels close to buildings
• Remove garden furniture, doormats and other items
• Seal all gaps under doors and screens
• Fill containers with water - eg bath, sinks, buckets, wheelie bins, etc
• Have ladders ready for roof space access (inside) and against roof (outside)
• Have generator or petrol pump ready
• Check and patrol outside for embers and extinguish any spot fires and seek shelter as the fire front arrives.

Fortunately, no people or properties were harmed. Despite the incident, residents were supportive of the QFRS's hazard reduction burn ahead of what is expected to be a dangerously hot and dry summer.
