Thunderstorms formed late on the 23rd and in the early hours of 24th on the Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay regions as a very active upper low moved through the area. Record breaking rainfall totals were recorded especially in the Noosa River catchment and around Rainbow Beach. Mt Bilewillam, about 10 kilometres south west of Rainbow Beach experienced the worst of the event. Rainfall totals for the periods from 20 minutes through to 72 hours exceeded the 100 year Annual Return Interval. Many rainfall records were set. Reports of thunderstorm wind damage (trees and power lines down, roads closed from debris, crops damaged) were also received from Tiaro on the 24th.
