A pair of super cell thunderstorms produced large hail over a wide area in the western Southeast Coast district. Hail as large as cricket balls smashed car windows on the Warrego Highway. Tennis ball sized hail broke so many roofs at Helidon, east of Toowoomba, that the SES ran out of tarpaulins. At Esk a watermelon crop worth $50,000 was destroyed by hail.
