A severe storm swept over Brisbane producing heavy rain and subsequent floods to the region. The Brisbane Weather Bureau reported that the intensity of the storm was a one in a 100 year event. Multiple towns were affected including Brisbane, Caboolture, Caloundra, Pine Rivers, Redcliffe, Logan, Beenleigh and the Gold Coast.

Widespread damage occured to infrastructure including roads, bridges and buildings. Furthermore hundreds of vehicles were inundated by the rapid rise in flood waters. Two people drowned in separate incidents from the heavy deluge. Beenleigh recorded 317 mm of rain in a 24 hour period. The Insurance Council of Australia estimated the 2001 damage at $37m with the 2007 estimated repeated cost of $63m.

The thunderstorms were produced north and south of Brisbane in convergent rain bands extending from a surface low over northeast New South Wales. These storms became almost stationary in a broken line parallelling the coast. Cars were flooded, roads closed, and houses inundated. The highest 24 hour totals were at Beenleigh 317mm, Logan City 284mm, Marsden 251mm, Cooroy Composite 232mm and Ball Lookout 218mm.
