A series of storms affected the Southeast Coast and Wide bay districts during the early afternoon of the 30th. A man was killed (near Gympie) by a lightning strike. A man died in a traffic accident to the north of Maroochydore Airport and two nine year old students were injured by a falling tree at the University of Queensland?s St Lucia campus. A block of units in inner-city New Farm lost its roof and an apartment building at Woodridge, south of Brisbane was also damaged. The storms uprooted trees and brought down power lines across Brisbane Redlands and Pine Rivers. Throughout the Brisbane area hundreds of houses were damaged by wind and falling trees and 121,000 homes lost power. The strongest winds were recorded from Banana Bank AWS on Moreton Bay near Cleveland with gusts to 122km/h. Brisbane recorded 83km/h, Brisbane Airport 89km/h, and Cape Moreton 102km/h.
