A severe storm brought extreme weather conditions in the Toowoomba region. Gale force winds combined with large hail produced widespread damage to infrastructure, buildings and houses. The Insurance Council of Australia estimated the 1976 damage at $12m with the 2007 estimated repeated cost of $265m. Hail to 7cm in size hit Toowoomba at about 2.30am. As many as 1000 buildings suffered damage.
