Tropical Cyclone Emily crossed the coast in a sparsely populated area just to the south-east of Gladstone. Wind damage was confined to trees and sheds.

Flooding occurred at Kingaroy and Brisbane as a result of the tropical cyclone. Emily crossed the coast just to the SE of Gladstone while rapidly weakening. The cyclone had been very severe and generated huge seas. It was a category 3 cyclone at landfall and an 81 knots wind gust was recorded at Gladstone which was outside the peak damage area.

The Australian Maid which was competing in the multi hulled section of the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht race founded at noon on second April and two crew members drowned in 35 feet (10.7m) waves off Bustard Heads. The Prawn trawler Kotoku was wrecked on Lady Elliot Island, two crew were saves and two were lost. The pleasure cruise yacht Istria disappeared without trace and 4 men were on the yacht at the time. No trace has ever been found of the yacht or its crew.
