Heavy rains from the end of the 1st week to the end of the 3rd week caused the first flood period. Record or near record flood levels were reported in all tropical coast streams and in the Burdekin and Fitzroy river systems. Traffic dislocation was extensive. All rail routes and major traffic arteries were cut and the Inkerman railway bridge over the Burdekin River was submerged for 3 weeks from 10th to 30th. Many homes in low lying areas had to be evacuated and food drops were necessary in the Muttaburra and Richmond areas.
