On the 6 March Cyclone Agnes, the first Australian tropical Cyclone tracked on radar passed over Townsville, Ingham, Cairns, McKay and then into the interior. Widespread damage was caused with many homes suffering roof damage, with at least 20 homes left uninhabitable. As a result of Cyclone Agnes, four deaths occurred from inland flooding. The 1956 damage cost was estimated at ?2.5m in Cairns and ?1m in Townsville. TC passed right over Townsville Met Office with bar down to 961 hPa. Maximum wind gusts 73 knots at Townsville and 79 knots at Cairns. Damage at Cairns similar to that at Townsville due to extremely gusty westerly winds.
