A tropical cyclone crossed coast just south of Mackay with eye passing over Sarina and bar down to 963 hPa. On 7 March 1955, between Mackay and Cape Capricorn, a lugger (boat) sank when it was caught in a cyclone with winds that reached 145 km per hour. The crew of eight drowned.

Several buildings were unroofed at Yeppoon and major floods occurred at Flinders Burdekin and Fitzroy Rivers. Widespread structural damage occurred in the region and heavy flood rains. Bar down to 957 hPa on vessel Cape Hawke just off Mackay at 2pm 7th with southwesterly winds of Force 12 (hurricane) and over. 50 to 80 knot winds affected the coast between Cape Capricorn and Mackay.
